Born in Germany, Frieder Berthold is an internationally acclaimed cellist who has performed in all major music centers of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Russia, Korea and Japan, giving recitals and performing as soloist with established orchestras.
He studied at the Musikhochschule in Cologne and studied chambermusic with the Amadeus Quartet. He received a bursary from the Global Würth Foundation in order to study with J. Starker at the Indiana University in Bloomington, USA.
Fundamental to his musical development have been masterclasses during international festivals with Misc
ha Maisky, William Pleeth, R. Dubinsky (Borodin Quartet), S. Devich (Bartok Quartet), F. Erblich (Orlando Quartet), and Norbert Brainin (Amadeus Quartet) with whom, since 1994, he has regularly performed in chambermusic recitals.
Frieder has lived in northern Italy since 1994 and during the last 12 years has been Artistic Director of the music festivals “Limone sul Garda Classica” and “Musica di Mezza Estate Caldonazzo” in Trento.
Known in Europe as a sensitive chamber musician he regularly joins the members of the Moscow Rachmaninov Trio, the Amadeus Ensemble, the Rimsky-Korsakov Quartet and others at various international festivals. He performs worldwide with the renowned Ensemble Novalis.
In 1998 he won First Prize in the International Chambermusic Competition (cello/piano) in Brescia, Italy.
He has recorded for many international broadcasting companies, including the German ZDF, Italian RAI, the French, Russian, Korean and Japanese Radios. He records for the labels MP-Music, Tacet in Germany and for Tactus and Ducale (Brahms sonatas) in Italy and gives international masterclasses in Italy and Germany.
